How to choose the right wall colour

November 10, 2011 Trackback Design by Axiom Mortgage Edit

Colour is tricky—a bad wall colour can often set the stage for bad design choices. The colour of your walls dictates where you can go with your design —pick a bold, arresting colour and you are gravely limited to what you can work with in your room.  Working with colour takes some finesse, yet it is easier than ever to make good colour choices.

Many designers have come out with wonderful new lines of paint that take a lot of the guesswork out of matching wall colour to trim colour, and even choosing accent colours to complete the combination.  Martha Stewart's line of paint for the Home Depot, for example, offers paint chips which incorporate both ceiling and trim colour combinations making for a pretty “goof-proof” equation.  Benjamin Moore has fan decks created by designers to showcase tested and tried paint colours which would complement any decor.

Once those wall woes are taken care of, think about how to bring in colour without overwhelming your space.  Think of how colours appear in nature for example, and you can't go wrong.  Look around you and the play of colour is apparent everywhere. Think of Greece for this example: blue waters washing upon sandy brown beaches, green cypress trees and whitewashed houses—an unbeatable combination!  There, in a nutshell, is your colour scheme and away you go creating your own paradise.

If colour choices are too overwhelming to you, or you just would like some guidance, consider a designer.  A designer will come into your home, offer you some sound advice and get you started with colour combinations.  A colour consultation will not break the bank and you can be assured that you have an awesome starting point for your vision.
